Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title magnetic powder having a narrow coercive force distribution by using γ-Fe2O3 powder reduced under specified conditions in production of the title powder by treating a dispersion contg. iron oxide magnetic powder, a cobalt salt and an alkali.
CONSTITUTION: γ-Fe2O3 powder is dispersed in a high b.p. polyol such as (poly)alkylene glycol or glycerol and heated at about 150°CW the b.p. of the solvent to partially reduce the γ-Fe2O3, thus forming iron oxide magnetic powder whose oxidation state is between γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4. An aq. dispersion is then formed contg. the iron oxide magnetic powder wetted with the polyol, a cobalt salt such as cobalt chloride or cobalt sulfate, and an alkali such as sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide in an amt. of an equivalent or more to the salt. This dispersion is treated at a suitable temp. for an adequate time to obtain cobalt-contg. iron oxide magnetic powder.
