Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove sulfur to such an extent that it does not act as catalyst poison and to availably obtain dithionite by hydrogenating a functional soln. prepared by reacting alkyl sulfite or the like and hydroquinones and by recycling the hydrogenated soln. to react it with the alkyl sulfite or the like.
CONSTITUTION: In a method of producing dithionite by reacting (A) (1) hydrogensulfite, pyrosulfite, alkyl sulfite or aryl sulfite of a Ia, IIa or IIb group element or ammonia or (2) a substance which reacts with (a) sulfurous anhydride or sulfurous acid to form salt of (a) and sulfurous anhydride or sulfurous acid with (B) hydroquinones, the resulting functional soln. contg. quinones is desulfurized by being contacted to an aq. alkaline soln. or slurry of pH≥11. The desulfurized soln. is then hydrogenated in the presence of VIII group metal catalyst to convert the quinones into hydroquinones, and the hydroquinones-contg. soln. is recycled to be reacted with the cpd. (A).
