Abstract

PURPOSE: To use a substance (MoW)C having the same hexagonal crystal form as a substance WC, as the matrix of a sintered diamond piece, by replacing scanty and expensive tungsten by cheap molybdenum and binding grains of the substance (MoW)C by iron.
CONSTITUTION: About 30% by volume of diamond of about 30W40mesh saw grade is added to a mixed powder which comprises a powder of a substance (MoW)C and another powder of a substance consisting of about 50% of cobalt and 50% of nickel. These substances are thoroughly mixed with one another. The mixture is then set in a graphite mold and quickly heated by supplying an electrical current. The mixture is hotpressed at a temperature of 1150°C or less under pressure of about 50kg/cm2. The total time of heating of the mixture is about 5min. A firm crystallized piece is thus produced.
