Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the starting performance in cold weather and at the same time to reduce NOx, by placing a heater close to an intake valve at the intake hole of a cylinder head and heating a part of the air-fuel mixture by means of the heater and thereby subjecting it to oxidization reaction.
CONSTITUTION: Glow plug G is used as heater to be placed close to suction valve S at suction port O1 of the gasoline engine. By supplying power before the starting, its surface is made red hot or yellow. When cranking is started under this condition, a part of the air-fuel mixture touches heating tube 2 of glow plug G and is oxidized. Mixing with the air-fuel mixture, it raises the temperature, enters combustion chamber C from suction valve S and facilitates the starting. Here, glow plug G is constructed of metal heating tube 2, which is fitted to the hole of plug jacket 1, and spiral heater 7, which is enclosed inside and is connected to conducting rod 5. The surface of heating tube 2 is provided with catalytic material 9.
