Abstract

PURPOSE: To treat heavy metals, etc., to completely harmless artificial minerals and metals by melting ash, sludges, etc., by Joule heat generated by the electric resistance of molten ash sludges.
CONSTITUTION: The melt 5 is heated by means of Joule heat generated from the melt 5 as a resistor by electrifying electrode 1 buried in the melt 5 at a depth range of 10W300mm below the liquid surface, and at the same time the ash, sludges, etc., 6 are charged onto the surface of the melt 5 in a melting furnace through the chute 3 provided to the furnace ceiling 10 with the air hole 8 through which combustion air is supplied and also the exhaust gas outlet 7 through which offensive odors emitted upon combustion are discharged. In this case, an additive, e.g., a siliceous substance, a calcareous substance, etc. is added to ash or sludge to maintain the composition of the melt 5 at SiO2/(%)CaO+K2O+NaO+MgO/(%)>1. Thus, all heavy metals not metallized are enclosed in artificial minerals preventing them from being isolated.
