Abstract

CONSTITUTION: The polymerization of a 2,6-disubstituted-4-halophenol, such as 2,4,6-tribromophenol is conducted in a heterogeneous system consisting of water and a solvent insoluble in water as chloroform in the presence of an alkali, such as sodium hydroxide, using an interphase transferring catalyst, such as a quarternary ammonium, and hypohalous acid, such as hypochlorous acid or its salt at a temperature of 0W40°C to give the objective polymer.
