Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate ethylene glycol and ethylene carbonate easily, with low heat consumption and with a rectifying column having a low theoretical plate number, by distilling a mixture of ethylene glycol and ethylene carbonate in the presence of an alkylbenzene.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of ethylene glycol and ethylene carbonate is distilled in the presence of one or more compounds selected from alkylbenzenes expressed by the formula (R is 1W3C alkyl; n is 1W3; when n is 2 or 3, the substitution positions of the R are arbitrary), e.g. isopropylbenzene, etc. The azeotropic fraction of ethylene glycol and the alkylbenzene is taken out from the top of the distillation column and highly pure ethylene carbonate is obtained as the residue. The azeotropic fraction is separated to two liquid layers by condensation. The alkylbenzene is recycled to the distillation system and the ethylene glycol layer is if desired purified by distillation to give highly pure ethylene glycol.
