Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a tapering notch on most of the inner-circumferential face of a sleeve bearing for bearing a pinion shaft on a housing so that the sleeve bearing may be prevented from distortion even if a pinion is inclined.
CONSTITUTION: The pinion 1 of a starter attached on the tip of a pinion shaft 3 is supplied with the drive force of a DC motor (not illustrated) via a one-directional clutch 10 on the starting of an engine to engage with, and to transmit motive power to, an engine ring gear (not illustrated). A sleeve bearing of which a tapering notch 24 is formed on the other portion than a right-hand, i.e. axially-outward, portion (length:l) of the inner-circumferential face is used as housing bearing 9 for bearing the pinion shaft 3 on a housing 8. Thereby, even if the inclination of the shaft 3 is caused by that of the pinion 1, the end on the notch 24 side of the bearing 9 does not contact with the shaft 3 so that the distortion of the bearing 9 can be avoided.
