Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine of the type comprising a main combustion chamber, a subsidiary combustion chamber and an intermediate combustion chamber, in which at least two torch passages are formed for ensuring ignition and stable combustion of swirling mixture in said intermediate combustion chamber.

CONSTITUTION: An internal combustion engine of this invention comprises a main combustion chamber 5 furnished with air or lean mixture from main suction valve 4, a substidiary combustion chamber 7 frunished from subsidiary suction valve 6 with rich mixture that is ignited by ignition plug 8, and an intermediate combustion chamber 13 having a larger capacity than chamber 7 and disposed between said main and subsidiary combustion chambers 5 and 7. In such an arrangement, two combustion chambers 13 and 7 are communicated with each other by means of two torch passages 15, 15 opened in tangential direction to the swirl of mixture formed in the intermediate combustion chamber 13, and there is further provided an auxiliary torch passage 15a opened on the back side at an intermediate portion of the torch passages 15, 15. With such an arrangement, mixture in intermediate chamber 13 is ignited at least at two points, so that it is ignited without fail and combusted in stable manner.
