Abstract

PURPOSE: To protect a pair of thyristors in load current passages from a surge voltage, by providing a bidirectional Zener diode in a thyristor photocoupler in which the thyristors are turned on by corresponding light emitters to control AC power for a load.
CONSTITUTION: Thyristors th1, th2 and light-emitting diodes LED1, LED2 corresponding thereto are provided in a photocoupler 1. Diodes D1, D2 are connected across the gates and cathodes of the thyristors, respectively. A bidirectional Zener diode ZD is connected between the gates of both the thyristors. When the potential on a terminal 2 has become positive due to a surge voltage, the thyristor th1 is forcedly turned on. When the potential on the another terminal 3 has become positive, the other thyristor th2 is forcedly turned on. The thyristors are thus protected from breakdown although a temporary wrong action takes place.
