Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable continuous strengthening of a glass article by liquid cooling while preventing cracking due to a strain by heating the article to a temp. from the strain point to the softening point and passing the heated article through a cooling liquid vessel for strengthening by liquid cooling provided with an ultrasonic applying zone to quench the article by a predetermined method.
CONSTITUTION: Less than 3mm thick glass plate 7 is heated on movein stand 2 to a temp. from the strain point to the softening point, e.g. about 600W700°C in continuously heating furnace 1, and heated plate 7 is lowered into cooling vessel 3 from dropping outlet 8 with a hanger. In vessel 3 filled with a cooling liquid such as silicone oil or mineral oil, there is ultrasonic vibration zone 4 provided with several ultrasonic vibrators. Ultrasonic waves are perpendicularly applied to plate 7 in zone 4, and plate 7 is quenched to a temp. below the strain point during passing through zone 4(for 1W5sec). Thus, the cooling power of the weak liquid is increased, and continuous production of glass strengthened by cooling can be performed while preventing appearance of a strain. The product is taken out of outlet 9.
