Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a cyclic monoene under mild conditions selectively, by hydrogenating a cyclic polyene in the presence of a small amount of a palladium colloid catalyst having high activity and improved selectivity.
CONSTITUTION: A cyclic polyene having a carbon number of ≥5, e.g. cyclic dienes, trienes, tetraenes, etc., is hydrogenated in the presence of a palladium colloid catalyst, wherein the amount of palladium is ≤1/500 equivalent, preferably 1/500W 1/4,000 equivalent on the basis of the cyclic polyene. The catalyst is prepared by heating palladium chloride (II) in methanol in the presence of an alkali metal methoxide and a synthetic polymeric compound having polar groups (pref. polyvinyl pyrrolidone).
