Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide a temperature indicating paint which turns from black to red at 90W120°C, and is low-toxic, stable at a temperature of as high as 400°C, and useful for the temperature indicator of an oven, etc., containing a pigment composed of silver iodide, silver sulfide, and zinc sulfide.
CONSTITUTION: A temperature indicating paint containing a pigment composed of 80W98wt% of silver iodide, 2W10wt% of silver sulfide, and 0W10wt% of zinc sulfide. The paint is brown or black at room temperature, and turns to red at 120°C. When once turned to red color, it keeps its color by hysteresis effect until it is cooled to 90°C. The colors of the paint are not affected by the heat cycles. The paint can be prepared by (1) mixing the required amounts of AgI, Ag2S and ZnS, (2) heating the mixture at ≥400°C (pref. ≥ melting point), (3) cooling and pulverizing the mixture to obtain pigment, and (4) dispersing the pigment in a vehicle composed of a solvent such as ethyl acetate, a surface active agent, and a thickener.
