Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable switching of the polarizing states of light beams to be accomplished with small electric power at high speed by switching the oscillation frequencies of high frequency oscillators thereby switching the plane of polarization of light deffracted by an acousto-optic element to horizontally and perpendicularly polarized light.
CONSTITUTION: Two units of high frequency oscillators 11a, 11b are controlled by a select switch 10 and the selected frequency is amplified by a high band amplifier 9 and is applied to an acousto-optic filter element 2, by which it is converted to transversal ultrasonic waves. Incident light from a white light source or laser light source 3 is being applied to the acousto-optic element 2 and the single color light is selected out of the white color light in correspondence to the ultrasonic wave frequency and is emitted as diffracted light 5a, 5b. Here, the diffracted lights 5a, 5b with respect to the polarization state of the incident light 4 become the lights which vary in wavelength, and whose respective planes of polarization vary by 90° on both sides of the straightforward non-diffracted light 6 and these represent perpendicular and horizontal to the plane of the figure.
