Abstract

PURPOSE: To give the compression encoding to the picture signal including the mesh-spot picture by encoding the predictive error signal obtained through the automatic selection of distance D corresponding to the change of the mesh-spot pitch.
CONSTITUTION: Binary coded picture signal X is delayed by a fixed amount through register 2, line memory 5 and others to obtain samples A1∼A4 corresponding to picture elements a1∼a4. On the other hand, samples B1∼B4 delaying by the sample number equivalent to distance D are obtained through variable delay circuits 3a and 3b and then applied to ROM6 along with samples A1∼A4 to generate predictive value Pi. Value Pi is then supplied to exclusive logic sum circuit 7a, and thus predictive error signal Yi is delivered to be memorized in shift register 8. Comparator 10 transmits signal M to multiplexer 12a to select the minimum predictive noncoincidence number through counting and comparison. Here signal Yp featuring the minumum predictive error is delivered. Both signals Yp and M are sent to encoder 13 for the compression encoding, and thus the compression code is drawn out through output terminal 20.
