Abstract

PURPOSE: To measure electrolyte leakage of batteries precisely without breakage, by illuminating the light from a source on the upper surface of a battery and on the entire circumferencial side surface of the battery and receiving the reflected light, and calculating and displaying.
CONSTITUTION: The light from a source 2 is reflected on the half mirror 4 to illuminate the upper surface of a battery 10a, reflected light from the surface 10a the intensity of which varies depending on conditions of the upper surface 10a due to electrolyte leakage is received with a reciever 1 and memorized in an arithmetic controller 7. Next, the light from the source 3 is directed to the side surface 10b of the battery through a reflector 5, and the reflected light is received with the receiver 1 through the half mirror 4, this measurement is operated scanning around the entire circumferencial side surface 10b of the battery by a synchronous drive 9, and the results are memorized in the arithmetic controller 7. Thus electrolyte leakage can be measured precisely and objectively by comparing with the intensities of the lights from a battery without leakage, and by evaluating synthetically extents of leakage on the upper surface 10a of the battery and on the side surface 10b in the arithmetic controller 7.
