Abstract

PURPOSE: To stabilize the electrical performance and to improve the picture quality, by making the width of a plate-shaped filament at both ends thereof larger than that at the central portion, and fastenting an electrically conductive electrode to the large width portion and a cathode to the central portion.
CONSTITUTION: A directly-heated cathode 40 is constructed from a filament 15, a cathode 17a formed of an alloy mainly consisting of Ni and containing Mg, Si, W, etc., and an electron emitting material 17, said electron emitting material 17 consisting of BaSr, CaO3, etc. The fixing support portion 15a of the filament 15 has a width larger than that of the central portion, and the central portion forms a cathode filament 15b for keeping the cathode temperature constant. The area ratio between the effective filament 15b and the fixing support 15a lies in a range of 1/2W1/5. Thus, temperature control with no fluctuation can be effected so that a stabilized electrical performance and a greatly improved picture quality can be achieved.
