Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to measure the accurate COD by adding magnesium salt and phosphate, which are soluble in test water, so that the magnesium ammnium phosphate may be precipitated and removed.
CONSTITUTION: To the test water to have its COD measured by the alkali method, a soluble magnesium salt such as magnesium sulfate and a soluble phosphate such as its secondary salt are added together with an alkali metal salt and ammonium thereby to precipitate the magnesium ammonium phosphate. By setting the pH of this solution at 9.5W10.5, the ammonium ion left in the solution can be minimized. Moreover, the relationship between the magnesium ion and phosphate ion is made such that ammonium ion < magnesium ion < phosphate ion. Thus, the ammonium ion acting as an interfeerence substance can be effectively eliminated so that the correct COD can be obtained.
