Abstract

PURPOSE: To effect the title modification efficiently, and to reduce the corrosion of the device, by hydrogenolysis of a bituminous raw material in the presence of a Zinc chloride-based catalyst on a silica-alumina or alumina under specific conditions.
CONSTITUTION: Zinc chloride is dissolved in a sufficient amount of water, if necessary acidified with hydrochloric acid, and silica-alumina or alumina (S) is immersed in the solution to evaporate the water to dryness with stirring. The zinc chloride on (S) is heat-treated at 100W280°C to remove water, and the desired catalyst is obtained. The catalyst may be further heated at 280°C or above in air, preferably in the atmosphere of an inert gas. A bituminous raw material, e.g. asphalt, coal tar pitch, coal or its decomposition product, is subjected to hydrogenolysis in the presence of the catalyst at 250W500°C and a hydrogen pressure of 50W300kg/cm2 to give low-molecular compounds efficiently.
