Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyurethane foam of low brittleness, with good flame-retardancy and heat resistance, by the reaction between a polyol and a polyfunctional isocyanate with incorporation of, as a flame-retardant, an expanded graphite, in the presence of a catalyst, blowing agent, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The objective polyurethane foam can be obtained by the reaction between a polyfunctional isocyanate and a polyol having at least two active hydrogen groups in one molecule, in the presence of a catalyst, a blowing agent, and a flame-retardant. Said flame-retardant is an expanded graphite with a bulk density ≥0.2g/cm3 and its amount to be incorporated in the reaction system being 5W25 (pref. 10W20)wt%. If the bulk density is less than 0.2g/cm3, the improvement of the foam brittleness may be insufficiently accomplished; whereas its upper limit is desired to be ca. 0.8 in view of uniformity of the dispersion of the graphite. The present invention is especially effective in the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams.
