Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent occurrences of non-melting zone, by connecting the preceeding electrode and succeeding electrode in one body with screws applied to the ends of electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: For example, internal thread 3 is installed at the connecting section of preceeding electrode 1 and external thread 3' is installed at the connecting zone of succeeding electrode 2, and both electrodes 1 and 2 are connected each other with the threads. The outer surface of preceeding electrode 1 is tapered towards succeeding electrode 2 so that tapered portion 7 may be formed. By using this consumable electrode for melting electro-slag, non-melting zone does not occur and both electrodes 1 and 2 melt at the same speed, when molting is in progress and both electrodes 1 and 2 melt at the same time at the connecting zone, because tapered section 7 is small in diameter. The shape of electrode end becomes balanced one and ingots having excellent quality can be obtained.
