Abstract
PURPOSE: To increase the amt. of uranium adsorbed on a magnetic adsorbent by magnetically binding the adsorbent in a magnetic fixed bed to reduce the press. loss of sea water passed when dissolved uranium is collected from the sea water.
CONSTITUTION: Uranium adsorbing magnetic fixed bed 1 is divided into magnetic thin wire packed part 1a of large capacity and magnetic thin wire packed part 1b of small capacity, and parts 1a, 1b are provided with external magnetic field generating electromagnetic coils 1c, 1d. Sea water is passed through bed 1 with sea water pump 2. An uranium adsorbent such as ferrite or magnetite is bound by the thin wire packing such as steel wire or wire netting in bed 1 magnetized with coils 1c, 1d. After uranium is allowed to be well adsorbed on the adsorbent, the electric current being supplie to coil 1c is shut off, and the adsorbent in part 1a is shifted to part 1b. Gates 15, 16, 17 are closed, and an aq. soln. of ammonium carbonate is passed through bed 1 with pump 6 to elute the adsorbed uranium, which is then recovered. Since the adsorbent is magnetically bound in bed 1, it is not fall off and can be packed sparsely to reduce the press. loss of sea water.
