Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible saving of back chipping process after welding by superposing two or more sheets of strip-form bodies of inorganic fibers having flexibility and making the lower layer side broader than the upper layer side thereby providing the backing material.

CONSTITUTION: Three sheets of inorganic-fiber-made strip form bodies 1a, 1b, 1c are superposed, the strip-form body 1a of the uppermost layer part being constituted narrowest in width, the strip-form body 1b of the intermediate layer part slightly broader than 1a and the strip-form material 1c of the lowermost layer part broadest. The strip-form body 1c of the lowermost layer is made more flexible than the strip- form bodies 1a, 1b. In welding, this backing material is pressed and disposed to the back of the groove by a back pressing member 3 of a suitable shape and welding is performed. The deposited metal is held by the strip-form bodies 1a and 1b of the upper layer part of lower flexibity and forms even and neat back beads. Clearances are made in the serrating parts 4 of the strip-form bodies 1a and 1b as well as 1b and 1c, through which escape of the gas evolved is accelerated.
