Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the conditioning of cation exchange membrane-A to a cation exchange membrane-B comprising partially polymerizing the cation exchange membrane-A with diene derivative and then head-treating the resulting membrane with organic solvent to obtain the membrane-B which shows high current efficiency without rising cell voltage during electrolysis.
CONSTITUTION: One side of a membrane consisting of perfluorocarbon polymer having sulfonyl halide group side chain is reacted with an amine. The resulting product is treated at an elevated temperature and hydrolyzed to obtain a cation exchange membrane-A. This polymeric membrane is impregnated with an diene derivative having a carboxyl group and then the membrane is partially polymerized with said diene derivative having a carboxyl group by means of heating, etc. The resulting partially polymerized membrane is impregnated with a water-compatible organic solvent having a boiling point of above 120°C and heat-treated to complete the conditioning to a cation exchange membrane-B. When electrolysis is carried out by using the conditioning-completed membrane, the diffusion of OH ion from anode chamber to chathode chamber is prevented. High current efficiency can be obtaind, through cell voltage is low.
