Abstract
A cation exchange membrane is produced by impregnating a diene derivative having a carboxylic acid group and/or a group convertible thereto into a membrane of a fluorinated polymer having one or more cation exchange groups and then conducting a partial polymerization of the diene derivative, swelling the membrane in an organic solvent, heating the membrane and where necessary, converting carboxylic acid-convertible groups into carboxylic acid groups. The membranes are suitable for the electrolysis of alkali metal halides.
