Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the deficiency of hot steel material surface, by picking up video signal from the radiated picture of hot steel material, taking sets of parameter through the calculation of depth and width for each, and substituting the sets into the deficiency identifying equation.
CONSTITUTION: The radiated picture of the hot steel material 1 heated is caught by using a suitable optical system, video signal VS1 is obtained with the pick up unit 2 such as ITV camera, this is stored in the memory circuit 3, and the part less than the reference level P0 preset from the signals is individually picked up, the signal depth P and the signal width W are calculated for each, and the sets of parameters P and W are fed to the operation circuit 13. In the operation circuit 13, the operation is made by the deficiency identifying equation (I), and if there are signals such as scal or scale, the output value proportional to the degree of harmfulness is fed to CPU 24 on real time and also to the display unit 25, printer 27 and monitor 26.
