Abstract
PURPOSE: To achieve the reduction in electrolytic voltage and prevention of hydrogen generation by applying the porous electrode comprising holding the catalyst capable of oxidizing and regenerating quinones in the electrolytic bath to cathode.
CONSTITUTION: The sheet of an active material layer 3 is made from the mixed cases of quinones, e.g., p-chloranil as well as active carbon and polytetrafluoroethylene or other. An expanded metal 1 of Ti alloy containing Mo and Zr is placed. On this are subsequently placed carbon paper 2, active material layer 3, expanded metal 1', active material layer 3 and porous polytetrafluoroethylene film 4 and the laminate is integrated by pressing. This electrode 4 is so installed in the electrolytic bath that its porous polytetrafluoroethylene film 4 makes contact to air and its other side makes contact to the electrolyte. The electrolyte penetrates in the fine pores of the active material layer 3 and the p-chloranil makes contribution to electrolytic reduction reaction. When the p-chloranil becomes of hydroquinone type through reduction, the oxygen in the air subsequently diffuses through the polytetrafluoroethylene film 4 and the hydroquinone is regenerated to p-chloranil.
