Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve gradation characteristic of the images comprising water developing electrostatic charged images by covering fine wires of materials of different surface tensions to a metal roller having fine grooves, at a certain angle to these grooves.
CONSTITUTION: If a developing roller which is made of metal of surface tension γ1 and has grooves 1 is covered by fine wires 2, 2' with two kinds of materials having surface tensions γ2, γ3 smaller than γ1 (only one kind may be used) at the angle differing from that of the grooves of the roller, then water-base developer (e.g., aqueous dye solution) creeps up to all the lines where the static electricity of electrostatic charge images is strong, thus assuming dense images. Where that is weak, only the portions of the wires 1 where the surface tension is higher are developed and therefore the electrostatic charge images are developed with good gradation characteristic. Teflon, polyethylene, polystyrene, polyvinyl alcohol, polymethyl methacrylate, polyhexafluoropropylene, etc. may be enumerated as typical examples of the abovementioned materials of different surface tensions.
