Abstract

PURPOSE:In the oxidation of an aromatic or heterocyclic methyl compound in the presence of an alkali catalyst to the corresponding carboxylic acid, an alkyl-2-imidazolidinone is used as the solvent, thus producing the objective compound in high yield. CONSTITUTION:In the oxidation of a compound of formula I (ring A is pyridine or benzene or naphthalene ring) under oxygen atmosphere in the presence of an alkali catalyst to a compound of formula II (X is H, alkali metal atom), an alkyl- 2-imidazolidinone of formula III (R1, R2 are 1-3C alkyl; R3 is H, methyl) as 1, 3- dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone is used as the solvent. The alkali catalyst is, e.g., 1-10 molar equivalents, based the starting material, of sodium methoxide and the reaction temperature is 0-220 deg.C. EFFECT:The alkyl-2-imidazolidinone is so stable against alkali that it can be reacily recovered after the reaction.
