Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a bluish-green artificial jewel with various characteristics of a gadolinium gallium garnet (GGG) artificial jwewl by adding Co and V to a GGG single crystal.
CONSTITUTION: High purity powders of Gd2O3, Ga2O3, a Co oxide such as CoO and a V oxide such as V2O3 are charged into a crucible made of Ir or the like, and they are heat melted. GGG may be blended with a predetermined amt. of Co and V oxides, charged into the crucible, and heat melted. A single crystal is then formed from the melt by a pulling method, a temp. gradient method, the Verneuil method or other method. The total amt. of Co and V added to a GGG (Gd3Ga5O12) single crystal is below 0.5wt%, esp. 0wt%≤Co±V≤0.3wt%. The resulting GGG single crystal may be cut and polished to give a bluish-green jewelly material.
