Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce hard metal having greatly increased strength and wear resistance and free from contamination by lubricant, by sintering hard metal in a sintering furnace, and then quenching with inert gas at specified cooling rate by means of in-furnace cooling means provided outside the furnace.
CONSTITUTION: A case A made of graphite matter or the like in which is inserted the material to be treated is put on a table 30, and is carried into a heating chamber 20 by opening a door 22 of the chamber 20. Then, the door 22 is closed, and a furnace main body 10 is evacuated 40 to keep vacuum state, and the temperature is gradually raised to more than about 200°C by means of a heating element 21. By this temperature rise, the lubricant such as paraffin contained in the material being treated is removed in liquid form, and is recovered in a tank 44 by dripping. In succession, the main body 10 is heated to sinter the material being treated, and the door 22 is opened to move the table 30 up to the positon shown by solid line. Then, inert gas such as N2 is introduced 42 into the main body 10, and, by operating a blower 48, is circulated into the main body 10 while cooling with heat exchanger 47 through a duct 45. In this case, the sintered body is cooled approximately to maixmum 1000°C with the cooling rate of not less than 30°C/min, and hard metal such as titanium carbide is produced.
