Abstract
1370274 Vacuum sintering powder compacts LEYBOLD-HERAEUSVERWALTUNG GmbH 1 March 1973 [5 May 1972] 10066/73 Heading C7D A process of vacuum sintering powder compacts e.g. metal or WC, comprises pre-heating the compacts in a vacuum chamber at 100 -800 C while recirculating a purging gas through the compacts and a separator where the hydrocarbons volatilized from the compacts are deposited. The recirculation is then stopped and the dewaxed compacts are vacuum sintered in the furnace. As shown in the Figure the powder compacts e.g. WC containing 2% paraffin are stacked on trays 6 enclosed by a perforated cylinder 7, a heating cylinder 12 and radiation screens 35 within a vacuum furnace 1 surrounded by induction coil 5. The furnace is evacuated via pipe 18 and pumps 38. Recirculating pipe 17 branches off pipe 18 and leads via surface contact heat exchanger 19 nozzle 23, cyclone gas solids separator 20 and compressor/blower 21 back to the furnace 1. Inert gas is introduced at 31. By suitable operation of valves 25, 26, 27, 29, 30, 37, 40 by-pass circuit 39 can be brought into use to reduce the system pressure during purging until it reaches the level required for sintering; valves 25, 26 can be closed to empty and clean exchanger 19 and cyclone 20; at the end of sintering the charge is cooled by circulating inert gas through by-pass circuit 28 via heat exchanger 32. The process is started by closing valves 29, 30, 40 and opening valves 25, 26, 27, 37 and evacuating to 10<SP>-2</SP> torr via pumps 38. Valve 37 was then closed. Argon was introduced at 31 to 200 torrs, compressor 21 and induction coil 5 were started and the gas circulated. After ¢ hour, valve 40 was opened and the system pressure reduced to 10<SP>-1</SP> torr while the temperature reached 800 C. Valves 25, 26, 40 were closed, valve 37 reopened, pressure reduced to 10<SP>-3</SP> torr and the temperature raised to 1400 C after ¢ hour sintering, valve 37 was closed, inert gas was admitted at 31 and cooling of the charge was effected by opening valves 29, 30 and starting blower 21.
