Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the high-strength Ti alloy pipes of desired diameters by heating the blank pipe comprising coiling Ti alloy plate material and welding the butt portions thereof to soften and form an oxide film and applying rotary forging to this heated blank pipe.
CONSTITUTION: Ti plate material 1 such as of Ti-6%Al-4% alloy or the like which was so far impossible to be made into pipe is coiled and the side edges 1a, 1a thereof are butted together, after which they are bonded by welding 2 to form a blank pipe 3. Next, this blank pipe 3 is heated to 200 to 800°C to soften the material and form an oxide film on the surface of the blank pipe thereby imparting lubricating characteristics and preventing seizure to dies. Next, the heated blank pipe 3 which has undergone softening is subjected to rotary forging, whereby Ti alloy pipe 4 is produced. Subjecting the pipe 4 after rotary forging to annealing yields the final product of the Ti alloy pipe having high strength and high ductility.
