PURPOSE:To detect the abnormality of the tundish nozzle and enable molten steel level to be smoothly controlled by calculating the sectional area of the nozzle from the molten steel change quantity in mold and slab movement quantity. CONSTITUTION:A slab movement quantity calculator 13, which receives the signal of a timing generator 11, is inputted with the pulse number from a pulse generator 10 mounted to a drive roll 9 for drawing and calculates the slab movement quantity within unit time. A molten steel quantity calculator 12 takes in the molten steel level in mold from a molten steel level detector 8 and obtains the difference from the previous take-in amount. A sectional area calculator 15 is inputted with the outputs of the calculators 13, 12 to be inputted with the width and thickness of the slab and calculates the nozzle sectional area at the present moment. A nozzle opening comparator 16 compares this value and the preset nozzle opening, judges nozzle clogging or nozzle abrasion and inputs the signal thereof to an alarm device 17. The alarm device 17 announces the results of this judgement to the operator so that suitable remedy is taken.
