Abstract

PURPOSE: The introduction of amino or sulfonic acid groups in a specific and extremely fine polyvinyl alcohol fiber, thus producing said extremely fine ion-exchange fiber with high ion exchangeability.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution mix consisting of (A) 20W60wt% of a polyvinyl alcohol of 800W3,000 average polymerization degree and than 95mol% saponification degree and (B) 80W40wt% of an amorphous and water-soluble polymer of a polyethylene oxide of 3,000W4,000,000 molecular weight or a low saponified polyvinyl alcohol of 500W2,000 polymerization degree on the average and 83W 93mol% saponification degree is dry spun and the amorphous part is removed by dissolving to give extremely fine polyvinyl alcohol fibers of 0.1W1.0 micron diameter, 0.8W80×10-4d/f fineness. The resulting fibers are made to react with an aldehyde contatining sulfonic acid group or primary to tertiary amines in the presence of 15W25wt% of swelling inhibitor and 15W25wt% of an acid catalyst to introuce the sulfonic acid or amino groups in the fibers.
