Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide a cosmetic base giving cosmetics having excellent spreadability, slippery, touch, packing properties, and moldability, composed of a powdery beta-1,4-glucan having specific bulk density and a specific average particle size. CONSTITUTION:A cosmetic base containing as an effective component, a powdery beta-1,4-glucan having a bulk density of >=0.6g/cc under close-packed conditions, and an average particle diameter of <=25mu. The additive effect of its excellent stability and moldability unnecessitates or remarkably reduces the use of an oily binder such as an unsaturated higher fatty acid ester, and eliminates the disadvantages such as stickiness and puff degradation. The base is also applicable to lotion, milky lotion, etc. The powdery beta-1,4-glucan is prepared by hydrolyzing a cellulosic raw material such as pulp with an acid, pulverizing the hydrolyzate to an average particle diameter of <=4mu, and drying the powder.
