Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an epoxide by reacting immobilized cells of epoxide-producing bacteria with a hydrocarbon having a double bond in a cultivation medium.
CONSTITUTION: Bacteria capable of converting the double of a hydrocarbon to epoxide bond, e.g. Nocardia corrallina, Corynebacterium alkanum, etc., are immobilized by polymerizing a monomer such as acrylamide monomer in the presence of said bacteria. The immobilized bacteria is brought into contact with an olefin such as ethylene, propylene, 1-butene, etc., in a medium under aerobic conditions, and the produced epoxide is separated from the medium.
