Abstract
PURPOSE: To make possible colr displaying of more than two colors through utilization of guest-host effect despite the use of the cell of exactly the same type as that of conventional ones by combining the specific two kinds of dyes in the same cell.
CONSTITUTION: With the cholesteric type liquid crystal material having positive dielectric anisotropy as host, the multichromatic dyes such as of formulas I thru III in which the value of order parameters in the host material is above 0.5 and the dyes such as of formulas IV thru V in which likewise the value of S is below 0.3 are dissolved preferably respectively 0.1wt% or over. Then, when the liquid crystal particles assume homeotropic configuration through application of an electric field, the multichromatic dyes of good configuration state in the host liquid crystal no longer show absorption of light, in contrast to which the dyes of S0.3 or under whose configuration state is not good still absorb the light of the specific wavelength. As against this, in the configuration state other then the homeotropic configuration, the composite spectra of the absorption spectra of both determines coloring state.
