Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent stress corrosion cracking by converting the residual stress to a compressive stress with application of a surface working by a glass beads honing on the surface of a formed stainless steel material.
CONSTITUTION: One honing nozzle 6 face the inner surface of a stainless steel pipe 9 having welded zone 9a where a residual tensile stress is caused by welding while the other honing nozzle does the outer surface 9c thereof. The honing nozzles are separated about 5 to 15mm from each other and inject glass beads of about 70 to 1,000 with a pressure of about 4 to 5kg/cm2 so that the pipe is turned on the shaft 10. In this manner, a hardened layer of a satin pattern is formed on the outer and inner surfaces of the pipe 9. It converts residual tensile stress to a compressive stress thereby yielding a favorable effect on the prevention of stress corrosion cracking.
