Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain an optically high quality glass compsn. with a low softening point and a high refractive index suitable for production of glass fiber for light communication by substituting GeO2 or B2O3 for part of SiO2 in a multicomponent silicate glass compsn. CONSTITUTION:By substituting GeO2 and/or B2O3 for part of SiO2 in a multicomponent silicate glass compsn., a compsn. is prepared consisting of, by wt., SiO2 29-42%, GeO2 0-15%, B2O3 0-20%, Al2O3 0-2%, BaO 0-47%, Li2O 0-4%, Na2O 2.8-12%, CaO 3-5% and MgO 0.5-1%.
