Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide high purity glass consisiting of a specified wt. percentage each of SiO2, B2O3 and Na2O, havig a low softening point and a high refractive index, and suitable for producing a glass fiber for optical communication. CONSTITUTION:This SiO2-B2O3-Na2O type optical glass for optical communication consists of, by wt., 5-65% SiO2, 10-70% B2O3 and 2-35% Na2O. Super high purity SiO2 can be synthesized by the flame hydrolysis of SiCl4, and B2O3 and Na2O can be purified easily by an ion exchange method, so high purity glass can be manufactured. By adding BaO to the above-mentioned components SiO2-B2O3-BaO-Na2O type glass consisting of by wt., 5-65% SiO2, 10-70% B2O3, 1-45% BaO and 2-35% Na2O may be obtd. and used for the similar purpose.
