Abstract

PURPOSE: To minimize the use amount of costly shielding gas and lower the cost of welding work by detecting the groove depth during welding and operating the required shield gas flow rate by said value thereby controlling the flow rate in the case of arc welding by the use of shielding gas.
CONSTITUTION: At the time of shielding-gas-arc-welding the base material 1 by a welding device provided with a shielding gas inlet box 3 and welding chip 4, groove depth H is detected by a rod 8 with a roller 9 running in antecedence and a potentiometer 7. The detection output from the potentiometer is put in a control unit 10 which then operates the required shielding gas amount from the depth of the groove. The results of the operation are inputted to the flow control valve 6 of the shield gas inlet pipe 3A to control the valve 6 and requlate the shielding gas such as Ar or other to the amount necessary for the groove depth H. The use of unnecessarily large amount of costly shielding gas such as Ar is obviated and the cost of Ar gas may be adequately saved.
