Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the cis-trans isomerization of an unsaturated compound which can take the cis- and the trans-form, economically, in high selectivity, by irradiating the compound with light in the presence of a mercaptan.
CONSTITUTION: The cis-trans isomerization of an unsaturated compound which can take the cis- and the trans-form, is carried out by irradiating the compound with light in the presence of a mercaptan. The mercaptan is, e.g. n-laurylmercaptan, n-decylmercaptan, etc. and it accelerates the photoisomerization. Preferably the amount of the mercaptan is 0.1W5mol per 1mol of the unsaturated alcohol. The light source is, e.g. a high-pressure mercury vapor lamp, a xenon lamp, etc.
EFFECT: As the reaction solution hardly absorbs light, the reaction proceeds with remarkably low rate of light irradiation and the equipment can be simplified.
