Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a copolymer with MW freely controlled, having unsaturated bonds on the side chain, by polymerizing a 2-12C alpha-olefin with a specified branched 1,4-diene, in the presence of H2 by use of a specified Ziegler-Natta catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A branched 1,4-diene of the formula (wherein R is <=8C alkyl: R<2> and R<3> are H or <=8C alkyl, where R<2> and R<3> are not at the same time H) is polymerized with a 2-12C alpha-olefin, in the presence of H2, using a catalyst, in which a transition metal component is a halogen-containing titanium compound (TiCl4, TiCl3, etc.) or its composition (3TiCl3.AlCl3, etc., or a supported titanium halide on a carrier, etc.). Thus it is possible to efficiently prepare a copolymer in an arbitrary form such as liquid, thermoplastic or elastomeric, by freely controlling its MW by means of H2 concentration.
