Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce an α-olefin polymer extremely excellent in heat resistance, by using a catalyst consisting of an organoaluminum compound and a titanium trichloride-containing solid subtantially free of aluminum trichloride.
CONSTITUTION: In polymerizing an α-olefin having a branching at the C atom in position 3 (e.g., 3-methylbutene-1) or coplymerizing such an olefin with a different olefin (e.g., ethylene), use is made of a catalyst prepared by combining an organoaluminum compound wit a titanium trichloride-containing solid completely free of aluminum trichloride or containing aluminum trichloride in an amount corresponding to a mol ratio to titanium trichloride of below 0.1. According to this process, an α-olefin having a branching at the C atom in position 3 can be polymerized at a rate several times higher than those in conventional processes and, therefore, a high-m.p. polymer is obtained in high yields. Accordingly, this process is useful.
