Abstract
PURPOSE: To measure the activity of microbe with a simple means rapidly and exactly by measuring a decrease of dissolved oxygen or a production of acid on contacting the microbe electrode with reacted material.
CONSTITUTION: A microbe the activity of which is to be measured is cultivated in an ordinary culture medium. The bacteria are attached to a support such as millepore filter, the support is contacted with the diaphragm of oxygen electrode and fixed with a net. The microbe electrode 1 is set on the flow-cell 3, which is provided with the rotor 5 and magnetic stirrer 4, through the packing 2. A carrier such as water is fed to the system from the feed pipe 8 and air is done from the pipe 7. In this state, electrode current is recorded on the recorder 6 as the base line. After the base line is stabilized, aqueous solution of reacted material if fed from the sample inlet 9, the peak of electrode current that reduces according to the extent of activity to saccharides and organic acids is recorded on the recorder 6.
