Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the decrease in mechanical strength of a pipe caused by the fluctuation in pressure of fluid in the pipe, or caused by vibration of engines, by forming diffusion hardened layer composed of an intermetallic compound such as FeAl2 on the surface of a heavy walled, small diameter tube, which is used for supplying fuel to a diesel engine, in order to harden and strengthen the surface of the tube wall. CONSTITUTION:A diffusion hardened layer 1 composed of an intermetallic compound FeAl2 is formed on the inner and outer surfaces 4, 4' of the wall 3 of a heavy walled, small diameter tube 2 such as about 6-30mm. in tube diameter and about 2-12mm. in wall thickness. This method prevents the decrease in mechanical strength caused by fatigue due to the fluctuation in pressure of a fluid flowing through the pipe or to the vibration of engines, hereby the mechanical properties preventing the occurrence of cracking or breakage is improved.
