Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an alkali chitin completely soluble in ice water, which is under consideration as a replacement for the biological membrane, by agitating a chitin powder at low temperatures with addition of an aqueous alkali solution and then treating it under pressure.
CONSTITUTION: A chitin powder is mixed with water and the mixture is boiled at 103W160°C, at a pressure of 0.1W5kg/cm2. The obtained water-containing chitin powder is treated under pressure, after addition of an aqueous alkali solution, whereby not only the surface but also the inside of the chitin is in pregnated with the aqueous alkali solution because of the breaking of the chitin micelle, to obtain a complete alkali chitin. It is adequate to use about 5W10pts.wt. of aqueous alkali solution for 1pts.wt. of chitin. The treatment is carried out at 5W500kg/cm2 by means of compression or extrusion.
