Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the vibration-absorbing capability of a flakelike graphite cast iron through limited surface ratio of flakelike graphite and base reformation by a method wherein the flakelike graphite cast iron in which C, Si and carbon equivalent is specified is treated with austempering.
CONSTITUTION: Flakelike graphite cast iron containing C: 3.0W3.7wt%, Si: 1.3W 2.3%, carbon equivalent (C+1/3 Si): 4.3% or less is treated with austempering at about 220W360°C. This provides an improved bainite structure having flakelike graphite in 7W15% surface ratio and the base including the remaining austenite in 10W40% surface ratio. This treatment provides a flakelike graphite cast iron having an enhanced damping properties without increasing the amount of carbon. Also, reduced amount of carbon increases its strength.
