Abstract

PURPOSE: The reaction of inexpensive and readily available urea with a formic ester gives simultaneously both of a starting material of medicines such as hypnotic and another starting material of chloramine or solvent.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between a formic ester of HCOOR (R is alkyl) and urea gives simultaneously both of a carbamic ester of NH2COOR and formamide. The reaction is effected preferably at 120W200°C under a partial pressure of carbon monoxide of higher than 10kg/cm2G in the presence of a catalyst of heavy metal salt. The amount of the formic ester employed is 0.5W10, preferably 1W5mol, per mol of urea.
